Multi-Pet Discounts: What to Know About Insuring More Than One Pet
If you've got more than one dog or cat at home, insuring all of them can feel like it multiplies your costs the same way vet bills do. Many carriers offset that with a multi-pet discount, but it's worth understanding how that discount actually works before assuming it makes every pet equally affordable.
A multi-pet discount is typically applied as a percentage reduction on each pet's premium once you insure more than one animal with the same carrier. The discount usually applies per additional pet, so the more pets on the same account, the more the household saves in aggregate, even though each individual policy is still priced on its own.
That last part matters. Even with a household discount, each pet still gets underwritten individually — meaning age, breed, and health history are evaluated separately for each animal, and each pet's premium, deductible, and coverage terms can look completely different from the others on the same account. A young, healthy cat and an older dog with a known condition won't cost the same to insure just because they're on a shared discount.
It's also worth checking whether the discount requires all pets to be on the exact same plan type and carrier, or whether you can mix coverage levels — for example, full accident & illness coverage on one pet and a lighter plan on another — while still qualifying for the multi-pet rate. Some carriers require uniformity; others don't.
For multi-pet households, the practical approach is to request quotes for every pet together rather than one at a time, since that's the only way to see the actual discounted household total rather than estimating from a single-pet quote. It also gives you a chance to compare whether a different carrier's combination of per-pet pricing and discount actually comes out ahead for your specific mix of pets.
