Wellness Plans vs. Accident & Illness Insurance: What's the Difference?
"Pet insurance" gets used as a catch-all term, but wellness plans and accident & illness insurance aren't the same product, and confusing the two leads to the wrong expectations about what's actually covered.
Accident & illness insurance works like traditional insurance: you pay a monthly premium, and if your pet has an accident or develops an illness, the plan reimburses a percentage of the vet bill after you meet your deductible. It's built around the unpredictable, expensive event — the emergency surgery, the unexpected diagnosis — and it typically won't pay anything toward routine visits like annual checkups or vaccines.
A wellness plan is structured more like a membership than insurance. You pay a set fee, usually monthly, and in exchange you get a defined list of routine services — things like annual exams, vaccinations, dental cleanings, and preventive bloodwork — often with no deductible at all. There's no reimbursement math because the visits themselves are what you're paying access to. What a wellness plan generally won't do is pay for treatment of an unexpected illness or injury, because that's not what it's designed for.
Because they cover different things, some owners layer a wellness plan on top of an accident & illness policy, effectively smoothing out both the predictable routine costs and the unpredictable emergency ones into one combined monthly cost. Others skip wellness plans entirely and just budget for routine visits directly, since those costs are foreseeable enough to plan for without insurance.
Which setup makes sense comes down to how you'd rather handle predictable costs. If you'd rather have a flat monthly number that covers essentially everything, a wellness plan paired with accident & illness coverage does that. If you're comfortable paying routine costs out of pocket and just want protection against the big unexpected bill, accident & illness coverage on its own may be enough.
